They’re seamlessly able to go from cute, embarrassing couple to loving parents. Kostur and Matlin are a riot as the Rossi parents who can’t keep their hands off each other. Kostur, Durant and the graceful Matlin (“Children of a Lesser God,” “The Player’”) convey pain, laughter and love without saying a word. She also sings incredibly - a star is truly born. It’s Jones’ powerful and moving performance, though, that makes Ruby’s choices understandable. Jones (“Doctor Who,” “One Day”) delivers the best coming-of-age performance since Elsie Fisher in “Eighth Grade.” It would be easy for Ruby to come off as selfish by neglecting her family and refusing to interpret for them. Representation has been a mess in Hollywood - looking at you, Scarlett Johansson. Oscar winner and deaf activist Marlee Matlin, starring as Ruby’s mother Jackie, reportedly threatened to leave unless deaf actors were cast. “CODA” is remarkable for its accurate depiction and representation of the deaf community. However, the director doesn’t overplay her hand and uses it only once at the perfect moment. 2019’s great “Sound of Metal” used this effect throughout the movie. It’s one of the many effective, if manipulative, emotional moments in the movie.
They do their best to smile and applaud but will never get to hear Ruby’s beautiful voice. Heder puts the viewer in the Rossi family’s shoes in this heartbreaking scene. As soon as the duet reaches that point, the film’s audial perspective switches to her family’s: dead silent. Once the duet begins, the same snippet is played and, finally, the viewers get to hear another part of the song. Heder teases the audience by showing Ruby and her partner/crush practicing the same snippet of the song multiple times. In one of the film’s best scenes, Ruby performs her much awaited duet at her fall concert in front of her family.

But there are magical moments - some euphoric, some cathartic - that elevate this movie above other paint-by-number high school dramas. At its core, the movie is a tried and true coming-of-age story with familiar tropes: parents who don’t understand their daughter, a high school crush and an eccentric music teacher. Ruby finds herself at a crossroads, forced to choose between her passion for music or supporting her family by interpreting for them and keeping their business afloat.ĭirector Sian Heder (“Tallulah,” “Orange is the New Black”) isn’t reinventing the wheel in her sophomoric effort.
Ruby works on her family’s boat catching fish with her father Frank (Troy Kotsur) and brother Leo (Daniel Durant), though joins the high school choir while her family’s fishing business is threatened. The titular acronym stands for Child of Deaf Adults who are represented in this film by Ruby (Emilia Jones), the only hearing member in the Rossi family.
“CODA” doesn’t waste a single dime of Tim Cook’s money - it’s a sweet, heartwarming tale featuring a winning cast and a future star in Emilia Jones. It may seem strange for the tech giant-turned-streaming service to be the home for a wholesome family dramedy, but it fits the modus operandi of their charming show “Ted Lasso” - a feel-good comedy that came out when everyone needed a mood booster. It sparked a bidding war and Apple TV+ won the battle, spending a festival record $25 million on the rights. When “CODA” premiered at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival, it was immediately one of the best received movies of the event.
